Step 4: Cleansing Waters

Did you ever play Hide And Seek when you were a kid? I did. It was fun. But on occasion, I would hide so well, no one could find me. They'd give up and move onto a new game, and I'd still be in hiding. Guess what? It wasn't fun anymore. Hiding for the sake of hiding isn't fun. It's usually uncomfortable, and you're sitting there all alone in the dark. It's the same way in our real lives. Hiding feels safe at first. But in the end, it leaves us isolated, unknown, forgotten about, cramped, and living in darkness.

This is not how God intends for us to live. He calls us out of hiding. Not so He can shame us or condemn us, but so He can heal us, cleanse us, and call us into victorious living; a life wide open.

Step 4 of the recovery process has a lot to do with coming out of that place of hiding, facing whatever it is we are afraid of (or enslaved to), and moving into a place of healing. Essentially: from hiding to healing.

God calls us from hiding into healing.

Step 4 says, We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

"Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord." Lamentations 3:40

And the Celebrate Recovery principle says,

"Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust.

(Steps 4 and 5) “Happy are the pure in heart.” Matt. 5:8

It's scary to face our own mess, but deeply satisfying and burden-lifting to come out of the dark; to rinse in the river of God's grace. When we let go of our secrets, take the inventory of our issues, and bring them to Jesus, He washes us in a river of forgiveness. He cleanses us from all our unrighteousness. He even heals us of the shameful things done to us. This is what the compassion, love, and blood of Jesus does. It fully cleanses. It fully redeems.

The Word of God teaches that the life of the body is in the blood. When Jesus shed His blood on the cross, He was laying down His very life to give us new life. His blood cleanses us, makes us whole, and brings us back to life. It's the ultimate transfer, healing exchange.

Enjoy these lyrics to our song for Step 4: Cleansing Waters. We can't wait for you to hear it…with the orchestra.

(Jill Miller, Rachel Barrentine)

I’ve been hiding behind a mask

My inner darkness chains me to my past

Trying to cover all these wretched scars

But these secrets starve my thirsty heart

My sin hits me like a desert storm

I’m buried under the guilt I can’t ignore

But then you whisper, child come to me

Come to the river where you can be redeemed

I bring my mess, my brokenness

You wash away all my shame

With your blood that makes me whole

I come to the river where your cleansing waters flow

I feel the rushing water on my skin

Your healing current gives me life again

The heaviness I’ve carried drifts away

I’m underneath the fountain of your grace

Cleansing waters flow

Cleansing waters flow
